Thomas Griffith was born Oct 20, 1885 to Robert and Jane (Leach)Griffith of Beckwith Township. He was the youngest of four children including John, Herbert, and Annie. His parents were 72 and 68 years of age when he enlisted. Thomas was 32 years old, 5’7, dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He was a carpenter by trade, single, living in Carleton Place and Anglican. Howard Morris was his neighbour on the 8th Concession near the Nesbitt family.
He enlisted as a result of conscription on Oct. 27, 1917 in Ottawa, ON and it was noted he had scars on both thighs. His enlistment was processed on Jan. 15, 1918 in Kingston, ON., given regimental number 3056115, and joined the 1st Depot Battalion. On March 12, he was admitted to the Ongwanada Hospital due to Grippe. He was discharged a week later and sent back to his unit. However, he was kept on leave until June 11 to recover. He was discharged on Sept. 9, 1918 from the 1st Depot in Barriefield, ON and sent home on Oct. 10.
After his service, Thomas married Sarah Whyte on May 18, 1920 in Beckwith Township. However, Sarah died in 1923 in the same year as his mother died. So Thomas married Jean May Forgie of Ramsay Twp. on Apr 22, 1924 in Carleton County. Thomas was 39 years old and Jean was 31. Thomas died in Nepean Township on Nov. 7, 1961 and Jenny died in 1974.
