John Ritchie #2140902, was living at 81 9th St. in San Francisco, CA when he enlisted on Aug. 31, 1918. His mother, Mrs. Jessie Ritchie who was born in Beckwith Township, lived in Beckwith Township at the time as well. John was born in Beckwith Township on Dec. 15, 1880 to George Ritchie and Jane Jessie Nicholand was a machinist by trade. He was married but separated at the time of his enlistment and made the decision to support his mother and not his wife. While he was not in an active militia at the time of enlistment, he had served in Africa for a year as Military Police. He went up to Victoria, BC to enlist instead of enlisting in the States. He was a large man at 5’11”, 160 lbs., 40’ chest, medium complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He declared himself to be Presbyterian. He had good vision and hearing. He had a tiny scar on his left arm and had good health.
On Nov. 6, John had four teeth pulled, two fillings, and bridge work done on two teeth.
John was established as a sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps for the 2nd Depot Battalion in the BC regiment and sent to Exhibition Camp in Toronto. After enlisting on Aug. 31, 1918, John wrote a will leaving all his possessions to his mother on Sept. 5. His captain, AH Wheeler served as his witness with S. Barker at Willows Camp in Victoria, BC. He was discharged on Dec. 24, 1918. He stated that he intended to live at 265 Berkley St. in Toronto. It is important to note that John enlisted at the age of 37.
In 1908, as a result of serving with the Canadian Mounted Rifles, 5th Regiment in the Boer War, John applied for a Land Grant. In 1911, John married Mary Corrigan on April 21, 1911 in Nipissing, ON who was 24 yrs old at the time. They immediately moved to Gold City, ON near Algoma where he was listed as a chef. John also lived in Assiniboia, SK in 1906 as a single man of 26 years of age. His father died in 1895 when he was fifteen and his mother died in 1932. John was also the second of three children including George A and Lillian.
