Charles Ewen Payne #3326550, was born on Sept. 15, 1895 in Carleton Place to Charles and Catherine (McEwen) Payne and lived at RR#2 Carleton Place. By 1911, Charles was living with his Uncle John and Aunt Annie McEwen with his four younger cousins, Albert, Cathleen, James and Allan near the Shail farm. He was Presbyterian and worked as a farmer and engineer. His younger sister, Miss Hazel May Payne, was listed as a next of kin. She married Eric Trimble from Munster on Jun 18, 1924. He was 22 yrs old when he enlisted on Jul 16 1918 in Ottawa. He was described as 5’7”, 143 lbs., medium complexion, blue eyes and brown hair with a mole on his right elbow and a birthmark on his right knee. He was initially assigned to the 2nd depot battalion and later the 3rd reserve CERB. He was discharged on July 17, 1919. He did write a will leaving everything to Mrs. Jessie Robertson of Carleton Place.
After enlisting, Charles was sent overseas on Sept. 26, 1918 from Montreal and arrived at Devonport on Oct. 12, 1918. He was then moved to Seaford on Oct. 23, 1918. Next, he went to Rhys on Dec. 27 and stayed there till July 1, 1919. On Apr 7, 1919 he forfeited two day pay for going AWOL on Mar 31 for 26 ½ hrs. He was attached to the Perm. Cadre for six months when he was promoted to A/LCpl on April 4. Finally, he was sent home on July 1, 1919 to Kimmel Park for his medical exam.
Upon discharge, he was found to be in good health. He also received two fillings and 2 extractions on May 23, 1919. He stated his intention to move in with his sister Lesley in Peace River, Alberta upon his return. He was listed on the 1940 Peace River, Alberta voter’s list as a farmer.
