Philip Henry McGowan was born Oct. 2, 1897 to Daniel and Lucie McGowan in rural Perth, ON. He was the third of four children including James, Daniel, and Wilfred. He was 20 yrs old, 5’7, 151 lbs., fresh complexion, blue eyes, and fair hair. He was single, a farmer by trade, Catholic and listed his father of Trochu, Alberta as his next of kin. He enlisted on May 25, 1918 in Sarcee Camp, Alberta, given regimental number 2293882 and joined the Lord Strathcona’s Horses with the 1st Squadron. It was noted that his right thumb and index finger was deformed and had good hearing and vision.
He received dental treatment on July 9 with four fillings, three teeth pulled, one tooth cemented, and two teeth bridged together. Philip was hospitalized in the camp hospital on Oct 15, 1918 due to the Spanish flu but did fully recover ten days later after a real scare.
Philip was discharged on Feb. 25, 1919 in Calgary, AB and went back to Trochu, AB near Lashburn, SK. Philip later married Emily Violet McGowan and died in 1981 at the age of 84. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Westlock, AB.
