Private John McDiarmid Reg. #3325823
Private John McDiarmid Reg. #3325823 was born on July 24, 1895 and lived at RR2 Carleton Place with his parents, John McDiarmid and Emily Robertson. He was the youngest of five children including Daniel, Robert, James and Annie. They were farmers who lived near Alex McTavish and Duncan McEwen. He was single, a farmer by trade, Baptist and enlisted on July 2, 1918 in Ottawa, ON. He was 22 yrs old, 5’9”,149lbs, 38” chest, blue eyes and brown hair, good vision and hearing, and low pulse. He also had a scar on his inner forearm from an earlier injury. He received 50cents a day, which went to mother when he was with the 2nd Depot battalion. The 2nd Depot was the reserve battalion the boys from this area were assigned to.
On July 3, 1918, he immediately got 4 fillings and a tooth pulled after his enlistment. On Oct. 22, 1918, he got the mumps and was admitted to the 14th General Hospital in Eastbourne, Sussex. He was discharged on Nov. 13, 1918 when he was with the 6th Canadian Reserve. He never developed a fever during this time, only a swollen nodes and jaw.
After enlistment in Ottawa on July 2, 1918, John sailed on the HMT Fiona and was taken on strength in Seaford on Sept. 12, 1918. After his mumps, he was sent home on June 23, 1919 on the SS Belgic to Halifax and discharged on July 3, 1919 in Ottawa. He moved back with his brother, James, and his family initially in 1921 since his father died in 1919. On Dec, 24, 1927, John married Lillion Campbell of Ramsay in Lanark County. He died on May 26, 1983 at the age of 87. His widow, Lillian, died in 1995.
John never saw any field of action. He received an honourable discharge and the British War Medal.
