Private Hubert T Preslay was born Dec 13, 1894 to Mr J Presley in Carleton Place, ON. No other information is known about his family. He was 20 years old, single, 5’3, 131 lbs, fair complexion, gray eyes, blond hair, and Anglican. His next of kin was William J Presley of 213 Moulton St. Port Arthur, ON. He had previously served with the 96th Rifles and the local 42nd Regiment in July and August, 1914 and worked as a plumber. He initially enlisted on Sept 5, 1914 in Prospect, Bermuda and then enlisted again on Aug 23, 1915 in Halifax, NS and joined the Royal Canadian Regiment. On Nov. 6, 1917, while still with the Royal Canadian Regiment, he left all his property and effects to Miss Laura Smith of 21 Newland Road, Worthing, Sussex, England in his will. However, on Oct. 6, 1918, he then revoke that will and named his sister, Mrs. Maud McCormack of Port Arthur, ON as his beneficiary. Mrs. Maud McCormack was listed as a housekeeper in Fort William in 1945 and later a widow in 1957.
Hubert trained in Prospect, Bermuda from Sept 5, 1914 until August, 1915 and was hospitalized and docked pay for 59 days as part of that time. He arrived in England on Sept. 1915 and was admitted to the hospital in Shorncliffe on Oct. 4 and stayed for 12 days. He then left for Boulogne, France with his unit on Nov 2 after serving 2 days of detention. On June 4, 1916, he was admitted to the hospital for shell shock until Aug 7. Hubert was then assigned to various admin positions including several hospitals, Post department and Headquarters located mainly in Bramshott. He was promoted to Lt. Corporal on Sept, 10, 1916 but then demoted back to private on Oct. 15, 1917 when he joined the 17th Reserve. Hen then rejoined his unit, the RCR in France on Nov. 11, 1917. He was granted leave on Nov. 10, 1918 to England. However, when he returned to his unit, he was hospitalized for 41 days where he was docked half his pay. He did receive dental treatment on March 19, 1919 where he received one filling. He eventually sailed home on April 12, 1919 and formally discharged on Apr 24.
On June 30, 1970, Hubert Presley died at Deer Lodge Hospital in St. James, Manitoba.
