It was discovered that he had limited mobility in his pinky fingers. He was formally enlisted on Jun 12, 1918 in Ottawa, ON and joined the Canadian Engineers Training Depot in Brockville. He first received dental treatment, getting 9 fillings and his 4 back molars pulled. He was then given unpaid leave from Aug. 31, 1918 to Jan. 29, 1919 to bring in his harvest. However, he was charged $10 for damages to his barracks before leaving.
Robert was discharged on Jan, 29, 1919 from the Engineers Training Depot #3 having served there the entire time. $9.90 of his monthly $20 went to his mother during his service. His medical exam found he had good hearing and vision with a normal pulse, weighing 135lbs and in good shape. He was in active service for two and a half months in Barriefield, ON.
He married Edith B. Izatt on , had one child, W. Allan and died on Jan 9, 1976 and is buried in Crawford Cemetery in Elphin, ON with his wife. His mother, father, and wife were all born in rural Perth, ON and his sister Margaret married J William Dowdall from Beckwith Township.
