Herbert Sidney Willis, #219637
Private Herbert Sidney Willis, #219637, was born in Leicester, England on Sept 6, 1884 to Frederick Willis and Eliza Bison, married Mrs. Menatha (Tysick) Willis of Franktown in North Gower, ON on Dec. 25, 1907, and worked as a farm labourer. He enlisted on Sept. 10, 1915 in Petawawa and joined the 80th battalion. He was 31 yrs old, 5’8”, 140 lbs, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, and Anglican.
Herbert began suffering symptoms of dizziness and pain to the pare cordial region. It was discovered his heart was enlarged, had a sallow complexion. His knee would hurt after walking three miles and start to swell due to an knee injury suffered in July of 1916. He started suffering these symptoms after 1917. He was eventually discharged as medically unfit. He never received any dental treatment. No diagnosis was ever found of his knee, but did have a high pulse. He did very little training and performed mainly clerical work with the 18th Reserve Battalion. He had regular shortness of breath.
Private Willis arrived in England on May 29, 1916 on the SS Baltic. He was promoted to A/Sgt on June 5, 1916 with the 80th battalion and went to Aldershott where he joined the 44th battalion on July 10, 1916. On Aug 31, 1916 he was admitted to the Military Hospital at Bramshott. He then went to the Connaught Hospital a week later. On Jan 10, 1917, he joined the 203rd battalion from the 18th reserve battalion. On May 15, 1917, he was then admitted to the Canadian Hospital in Etchinghill for the aforementioned symptoms and discharged on June 26, 1917. It was recorded he went AWOL for 24 hrs on Oct. 17, 1917 and was demoted back to private at that time. It appears he spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals for the rest of the war. Private Willis went to Kimmel Park for medical testing and discharge on May 23, 1919 and left for Canada on June 2, 1919 on the SS Lapland. He got to Canada on June 11, 1919. It was recorded that he passed away on April 4, 1960 at the age of 75 and buried in Carleton Place, ON.
