Neil Stewart Lewis was born on July 20, 1895 to Albert and Janet (Stewart) Lewis in Carleton Place, Lanark County. By 1901, they with his younger brother, Albert, Jr, moved to Brockville where they were listed as being of Irish descent and Presbyterian. In 1911, they were living on 25 Georgeman St. Brockville, ON. By 1917, he moved back to Ashton, ON where he worked as a farmer with his uncle and aunt John and Lizzie Stewart. . He was 5’8, medium dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
He was drafted and registered on Nov. 8, 1917 where he was assigned to the 2nd Depot, Eastern Ontario Regiment. However, he remained training with them in Ottawa until he was enlisted on May 27, 1918 and given regimental number 3322634. He then sailed on the SS Tunisian and arrived in England on July 22, 1918 and assigned to the 6th reserve battalion. He was discharged and sent back to Canada on June 23, 1919 sailing on the SS Belgic. Neil was hospitalized from May 8-19, 1919 due to the influenza and received 17 fillings in his teeth on May 29, 1918.
When he was discharged at age 25, he came back to Ashton where he married Elsie Simpson age 23 of Goulbourn Township, the daughter of William and Sarah Simpson, on Mar 2, 1921. According to the 1921 census, Stewart and Elsie were still living with his Uncle and Aunt who were 73 and 63 years old at the time and had no children. It is believed Stewart and Elsie eventually took over the farm.
